He will bark for a treat. He will also dance around on his hind legs. He's a tough little boy. He won't take guff from any other fur kin. He prefers big dog toys.

Annng Annng:
Sound he makes when he knows he has maybe barked too much. (Sounds like he is trying to say his own name.)

Shaking:
Angus will kick-start a body shake. A few good kicks with one hind leg, and the body follows! All he needs is a tiny motorcycle under him. HOL!

Blue Bellied Lizard Zones:
When petted or scratched in these zones (belly, chest, underarms) he will drift off to the land of Nod almost immediately.

In this little body is the spirit of my ancestor, the wolf!

An Accounting of Love

It was a late September afternoon and Jeremy was driving down a country road that took him through vineyards. Due to roadwork on the main thoroughfare traffic had been detoured.

His job took him all over the valley and today he had spent a good portion of his day behind the wheel. Down between two rows of grapevines something brownish-red caught his eye. Jeremy slowed the car to a stop.

With a hobbling gait, a tiny animal made its way toward Jeremy's car. Jeremy opened his door and stepped out onto the dirt shoulder. The small animal kept advancing, its head tilted at an odd angle. As the creature drew closer, Jeremy wondered how the animal could stand, let alone walk--it was nothing but fur, skin, and bones.

Jeremy knelt down, keeping still, until the small dog took a few more halting steps, then as if surrendering, the little fur boy collapsed at Jeremy's feet. He was so frail looking Jeremy hesitated to touch him. It was when the red dog turned his head up to peer at Jeremy, that Jeremy lost all his careful inhibition.

One of the young dog's eyes was totally destroyed. From his clear eye, the little dog studied him. He looked so sad it nearly broke Jeremy's heart.

With eyes misting, Jeremy gently scooped the fur boy up. "How have you made it this far?" he muttered before settling the little guy on the passenger seat of his car.

He drove to the vet he used for his senior Border Terrier, Chauncey. The vet, in examining the dog said, "He must be in a lot of pain with that ruined eye. The injury has been left too long untreated."

The vet looked at Jeremy, "I'll do all that I can to make him well."

Jeremy nodded and left the office.

~*~

Three days later Jeremy brought the furry patient home. He had an e-collar on to prevent him from scratching at the stitches that kept his eyelids shut. The infected, damaged eye had been removed.

Jeremy held the little boy; stroking him tenderly. The twinkle in the dog's remaining eye and his expression of thankful joy touched something deep in Jeremy's soul. He decided to keep him, but he needed to see how his older dog would get along with the newcomer.

As it turned out the elder dog would have nothing to do with the small red dog and there had been a couple episodes where the Border Terrier had physically threatened him. Jeremy and his wife were devastated--they had both come to love their little warrior.

So, Jeremy called the lady who ran a no-kill shelter in the next county and asked if she might accept a one-eyed little dog, with a big heart. She agreed readily after Jeremy explained the circumstances. He added the he'd like to come by every other Friday to pick the dog up and take him home for weekend visits. It was Jeremy's hope that their Border Terrier would have a change of heart and grow to accept the dog as a friend.

~*~

One week Jeremy got a call from the lady at the no-kill shelter, to tell him it looked like his little rescue had found a forever home. Jeremy knew the time might come when the dog, which he had never named for fear of becoming too attached, would be noticed by a loving human and taken home.

Jeremy's insides twisted painfully, this was the weekend he was to have picked the fur boy up for another try at Jeremy's house.

"May I come see him, one last time?" he said.

"Of course!"

Within half an hour he was at the shelter. The lady was waiting for him, the small dog in her arms. She handed him over and the dog's tail wagged furiously as Jeremy held him lovingly. Then the furry fellow showered Jeremy with kisses.

Jeremy hugged him tightly and murmured words of affection. He walked out to a side yard so he could be alone with the now-healthy fur ball, whose life he had saved. But, in saving his life, he had lost his heart to the brave little warrior with the huge loving spirit.

Before he left, the lady assured him the red dog was going to a loving home. He nodded, thanked her and drove away.

It was hard for the lady to tell him about the new home the dog was going to. Difficult talking to a man whose heart was breaking. Hard not to cry when she looked into his eyes brimming with tears.

Later that afternoon a woman came to collect her new family member. She had been told the story about the little dog. And, after she arrived at the shelter the lady told her about the man's last visit.

In his medical files, Jeremy had left a letter describing how he had come to know and love the little dog. Included in the letter was his phone number.

That night, with the phone cradled at her shoulder, she told Jeremy all about the red dog's new home. She told him she had named the furry boy, Angus MacFurgus...

...And Jeremy smiled.

Hi!  How are you doing?  I am so happy that yo came back.  There are not too many of us pets with special challenges we have overcome.  That's why I feel a special connection to you.

I am so sleepy! I guess that's what a dreary, rainy day does!

Thanks to all of my friends for your concern while I was lost. I did not run away on purpose. I just followed along as Grandma and PopPop were leaving, but they did not notice me. Here is:

Kyan's Big Halloween Adventure

I slipped outside when Pop Pop and Grandma went out to go to prayer meeting. I was wondering in the dark for four hours. I am not an outside cat. Do to my nerve damage in my head and spine I walk a bit clumsy at times. Mommy was afraid I would go in the street. She knows I could not cross fast enough. She was also afraid someone would pick me up because I am sop pretty. Then she thought when they see me stagger they would get me euthanized. Mommy's thoughts made her cry the entire time I was gone. She kept looking outside. Everyone in the house said I would not be outside. They said I may have gone to the basement or gone to sleep. Mommy went to the basement and looked all over the house. She was sure I was not inside because she knows me so well. I follow her everywhere she goes. If I am asleep and she leaves the room, I get up and follow her. If I am in another room, she calls me and I come right away. Mommy says that in these ways I am like a dog.

It was so dark outside. There was a light on for a while, but it made scary looking humans of all shaped and sizes come to the door. I was terrified and just hid around the yard. I could hear Mommy singing my Kyan and Ky Guy songs and sobbing through them. I could not find or get to her.

Finally Mommy had a great idea. Mommy put the dog that adopted her outside to look for me. When I saw the light and heard Goodbye "Ruby" Tuesday bark, I headed her way. I was so scared that I stayed in the shadow until Ruby went inside. Then I sent and cowered in the corner on the steps. My human brothedr found me there when he carried kitty litter into the house for Mommy. I found out that Mommy told Ruby to go outside and find me but not to eat me. She was a working dog on Halloween night and did her job well!

Mommy held me and kissed me when human brother brought me in through the back door. That night I sat on her lap and we cuddled for over two hours straight. Mommy got me warmed up then fed me. I sat by her but she did a lot more of the computer work for me. It took me a while to adjust due to the traumas I had been through in my past. Now things are getting back to normal. Mommy got us lots of different cat treats for Halloween. One type even has catnip in it! She golt a few new toys, too.

I have been so busy with the Awards for All Pets contests and trying to get in touch with Posh that I have not been able to do anything else. Feline brothers Baby Blue and Baby Black had their birthday. I helped Mommy raise them when they were wee little things with closed eyes! Mommy let Blue have the fun time on the computer. A lot of family stuff has been going on in Mommy's Real Life (RL) so she has been tied up and cannot help me at the computer.

I hope to be back soon! Kyan had a Big Halloween Adventure!

I missed all of you and was afraid I may not get to talk to you all again.

Hey,
I've been here but we've been busy nursing Phoebe back to health. She had her left eye removed on the 26th and she is healing well. Her right eye is not completely better but it is healing. She is down to 2 different eye drops every 8 hours now and an oral antibiotic twice a day. She also takes a capsule of lysine with each of her meals. I'm so sorry I've been so scarce but Mommie hasn't had much time to let me on the computer. My human Grandmother was here for 3 weeks too and my Mom had a headache for about 1 1/2 weeks. Yuk, always something. Hopefully now things will settle down. Hope you've been doing well.
We're getting ready for the big game between the Patriots and the Colts. My Mom is a big New England Fan.

Hi Angus,

That was so sad about Podey that we started to cry but then we remembered that Podey is in a better place where there is no pain or suffering. He will have lots and lots of pet to be with. Podey will be waiting for his family to join him too. And just remind your mom that every time she sees a rainbow it is Podey smiling down on his family.

It sounds like your human mom needs you to be helpful now since she is hobbling around and grieving too. That is a long time to have to boot it. Make sure she gets a lot of rest so she doesn't make it worse. Me and mom will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Angus,

Oh, my! It was so good to hear from you again! Like Maile, we thought you had left us forever. We're so sorry for the loss of your kitty siblings. It's so hard to go through emotionally on the entire family. Unfortunately, we know what it is like. We're also sad to hear of your Mom's health problems. We will keep the family in our prayers and thoughts for a quick recovery and for good wishes in the future. Please stay with us this time! We missed you soooooo much! We don't always get to get on ourselves; we may have periods of a couple weeks here and there, but we try to get back and let everyone know that we are alive. As we said, we're so happy to see you again!
