I believe a Maltese hair should be long and not in the so called puppy cut.  What makes a Maltese unique is their long hair.  It's long white hair is what makes them different from other breeds. 

I hope you don't mistake me for saying a Maltese hair should grow long to the floor.  That's your choice if you want your Maltese hair that long.  I believe a Maltese hair should grow half it's body length.   So let's say about "above knees."  LOL. 

I believe Maltese hair is easy to maintain also.  Just brush their hair once a day and wash them every 2-3 weeks.  I learned that if you wash a maltese every week, it strip them from their skin oils that is produce.  Their skin oils what keeps their coat shiny and silky.  If you want to know more about this, then send me message about it.  I'll be glad to tell you what I learned and know.
